The city of Bolzano is considered the “gate towards the Dolomites”. Due to its central position in a breath-taking alpine landscape, surrounded by famous mountains like the Renon, S. Genesio, Colle, Catinaccio, the Dolomites, and the Alpe di Siusi, there are numerous possibilities for hiking trips. Thanks to the three cable cars starting in Bolzano you can make great excursions.
During the summer, various lakes in the surroundings of Bolzano invite to stay and take a swim. Enjoy the Costalovara Lake, the Caldaro Lake and the two Monticolo Lakes.
During the winter, the nearby ski resorts offer numerous possibilities for winter sports.
Culture
Bolzano has ca. 105.000 inhabitants and it is the capital of South Tyrol. It is here that the Italian and German culture meet most obviously. Especially the historic town centre offers a lot of attractions, as for example the arbours, the Fruit market and the Walther Square. Every year in December the old town and the Walther Square transforms into a magic Christmas charm: the Bolzano Christmas market. Throughout the whole year, you´ll find a wide variety of events taking place in Bolzano and surroundings.
Bolzano has got several interesting museums. The Museum of Archaeology, showing the famous glacier mummy Ötzi, is probably one of the most famous museums in South Tyrol.
